When your doctor prescribes you or a dependent a medication, be sure that you are requesting the generic version, if available.
If a generic is available and a brand-name drug is dispensed, you will be responsible for the cost difference between the generic and brand-name drug. This applies even if your doctor notes "dispensed as written" on the prescription. Remember, generic drugs not only cost less, but they have the same quality, strength, purity and stability as their brand-name counterparts.
If you think you have an exception or a special circumstance, there is an appeals process in place. You can submit a benefit coverage review form if you feel there is a medical need for using the brand name version of the prescription. These forms must be filled out by a physician and then faxed or mailed in to Express Scripts at 877.328.9660
